Expert Witness

This course will prepare students to become expert witnesses within their professional fields. The course provides opportunities to participate in related activities within a court setting and will be taught by appropriately qualified personnel from within the field of law with the use of a state of the art mock courtroom to demonstrate cross-examination skills. Students will be supported through their learning using experiential techniques within a court room setting.

Content
The course aims to equip health professionals with the requisite knowledge and skills to become expert witnesses and issues addressed will include:
  • Important aspects of the Laws of Contract and Tort 
  • Rules of civil procedure 
  • Report writing 
  • Giving evidence in court 
  • Skills in cross examination

 

Specific entry criteria
A first degree in a related discipline, or evidence of equivalent professional/academic experience. Two years experience within a relevant field of practice preferred.
 
Delivery
Semester A 2012/13
  • Wednesday 10th October 2012 (14.00 – 16.30) (session will be videoed for those who cannot attend)
  • Friday 16th and Saturday 17th November 2012 (9.30 – 17.00) (attendance compulsory)

Study Route

This module can be undertaken independently or can form part of a Masters programme offered by the School of Postgraduate Medicine or other postgraduate programmes in the Faculty of Health and Human Science.
